FVMA Gold Star Awards

These awards go to members who have contributed much of their time and energy to the advancement of veterinary medicine and the profession at the state and local level.
Dr. Matthew Chandler, ’99; Dr. May-Li Cuypers, ’92; Dr. Suzanne Heckman, ’92; Dr. Michael McNulty, ’83; and Dr. Amy Stone, ’99, were awarded the Gold Star Award during the 2007 FVMA Conference.

Dr. Eric Dubbin, ‘88, is currently working with the FDA in Maryland.

Dr. Anthony Ishak, ’02, was awarded Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, JAVMA, August 15, 2007.

Dr. John Rossi, ’86, surgically removed a rubber lizard from bearded dragon. The bearded dragon swallowed a 7-inch toy rubber lizard, according to The Gainesville Sun, Sept. 20 edition. Dr. Rossi lives and practices in Jacksonville.

UF VMC sponsors two training programs for vet techs and receptionists
The UF Veterinary Medical Center is sponsoring a “Veterinary Receptionist Training Day” and a “Veterinary Technician Program” on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Hilton UF Conference Center. For registration information, visit the Division of Continuing Education web site

AAEP Conference
The American Association of Equine Practitioners Conference is scheduled for December 1-5, 2007 at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Orlando, Florida. Registration information is available at www.aaep.org. The UF College of Veterinary Medicine will host an alumni reception on Monday, December 3, 2007, in the Sanibel 1 at the Gaylord. More information will be available later.

[10 Years 1000 Miles - Horse Farm Hundred logo]Dr. Greiner with socks on his ears




Dr. Greiner’s last ride in the Horse Farm Hundred – 10 years and 1,000 miles
Dr. Ellis Greiner, a well-known professor of infectious diseases challenges you to join Team VetMed for his last horse farm ride. Greiner has ridden with Team VetMed since its inaugural fundraiser ride in 1998. He says this is last year to ride the Horse Farm Hundred.

We ask that each Team VetMed rider raise $100 in sponsorships. In return, those riders will receive a custom-designed Team VetMed jersey. This year’s jersey is the anniversary jersey – 10 years/1000 miles. All the monies raised go the Horse Farm Hundred Scholarship fund. This fund has awarded 12 scholarships since its inception in 2000. Rider sponsorship forms are available on the Team VetMed Web site.

All riders must register with the Gainesville Cycle Club also.

Alumni Council Meeting November 3
The Fall Alumni Council Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, November 3 before the game. Exact meeting start time will be announced when the game kick-off time is announced.Gator Growl 2007

UF Homecoming Weekend 2007 – Nation of Champions
The UF Homecoming Weekend 2007 is scheduled for November 2 & 3, 2007. The Gators take on the Vanderbilt Commodores in The Swamp.

Gator Growl headliners includes the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd band and comedian Frank Caliendo.

The CVM has limited football tickets, Gator Growl tickets, and celebration meal tickets available for sale to our alumni. Go to www.vetmed.ufl.edu/alumni and click on Homecoming Celebration to submit your registration forms. Registration closes October 12, 2007.

Distinguished Awards nominations due November 15, 2007
It’s that time again to nominate outstanding alumni, deserving veterinarians and those who have served the college and their profession in some special way. We want your help to bring these deserving candidates to our attention for the Distinguished Awards program. The categories include:

Alumni of Achievement – must be a UF CVM graduate
Distinguished Service Award – must hold a DVM or Ph.D
Special Service Award – outstanding service to the UF CVM
Young Alumni Award – alumni who graduated 10 years or less

The nomination form is located on the CVM Alumni Affairs web site under Distinguished Awards program. Send completed nominations packets to the college.

Himes Scholarship is closer to $100,000 goal
The James Himes Scholarship is close to the $100,000 goal which will qualify for a $50,000 state match gift.

Dr. Link Welborn, Class of 1980, challenges the Vet Med alumni to match the previous gifts in this scholarship fund.

With your help, the scholarship goal can be achieved and the amount of awards will increase to more deserving students. Make your gift online today.

In Loving Memory

Dr. Jack Mitchell, Class of 1999
It is with great sadness that we share information with you about an alumnus.

Dr. Jack Mitchell died August 16, 2007, in a drowning accident. Mitchell lived in Boca Raton and had practiced at the VCA Spanish River Animal Hospital for the last 8 years. The Mitchell family held a private burial service for him in Montana.

The VCA Spanish River Animal Hospital staff has established a scholarship fund in Mitchell’s name with the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. For more information on this scholarship, contact Zoë Seale.

Dr. Victor Shille, professor emeritus
It is with heavy hearts that we convey to you the death of Dr. Victor Shille, professor emeritus of Theriogenology. Dr. Shille passed away Sept. 9, 2007 at his home.

Dr. Roger Montoya, Class of 1997
It is with great sadness that we share information with you about an alumnus.

Dr. Roger Montoya, Class of 1997, passed way Sept. 23, 2007, from his battle with cancer.

Dr. Montoya lived in Green Cove Springs, Florida, and had practiced medicine with Banfield, for a number of years.

Cards and acknowledgments may be sent to his mother, Mrs. Hilda Ingles, 2526 Russell Road, Green Cove Springs, Florida 32043-9492. You may also sign his on-line guest book at Jacksonville.com. A celebration of his life was held Saturday, September 29, 2007 at his home in Green Cove Springs.

Montoya's classmates have established a scholarship fund in his name with the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. For more information on this scholarship, contact Zoe Seale.

Tailgate with the Gator Nation
If you are a member of the UF Alumni Association, you are invited to attend the pre-game Gator Nation Tailgates at Emerson Alumni Hall for home games. The fun starts 3 hours prior to kickoff of all home games and will feature food and beverages for sale, family fun, special guest appearances and big screen TV. The only way to take part in this for FREE, is become a UF Alumni Association member. (Non-members are charged admission)

All away game Gator Nation Tailgates are free and open to all Gators. Visit with Albert, the UF cheerleaders and the rest of the Gator Nation 3 hours prior to kickoff at every away game.

Inaugural Florida/Georgia Pep Rally
Will you be in Jacksonville for the 2007 Florida vs. Georgia football classic on October 27? If so, make plans to join the Gator Nation at the first ever Florida/ Georgia Pep Rally. Located just outside the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium at the baseball grounds of Jacksonville, this pep rally will have everything you need to get pumped up before the game.

Gates open 3 hours prior to kickoff with the pep rally starting 2 hours prior to kickoff. UF Alumni Association members are free, while non-members are charged $5 per person at the gate.
